The sanctuary at Valley Center Christian Church underwent quite a transformation Sunday night; in fact, it looked more like a factory with rows of assembly lines than a sanctuary. Church members gathered to help package meals for the organization Numana, which sends food to countries in need. Volunteers dumped rice, beans and other food products into plastic bags, which were then sealed and placed into a box for shipping. I had attended a Numana packaging event at the Kansas Coliseum before, but it was neat to do it again. It’s fun to work with a large group of people on a volunteer project. Even though each volunteer’s individual role may have been small — dumping a cup of rice into each bag, weighing the bags, etc. — together we were able to package more than 10,000 meals in less than two hours! Sometimes when we turn on the TV and watch the evening news, it’s easy to become discouraged by all the negative headlines. We hear about wars and starvation in third world countries, and we may feel powerless to do anything about it. Yet even if we are only able to do something small to help, Christ still calls us to be a light in a dark world and reach out to those in need. In reality, the 10,000 meals we packaged will probably just make a small dent in the massive problem that is world hunger. However, shipping out those meals will mean there are 10,000 extra meals that weren’t out there before, and several thousand people won’t have to go hungry for a day. If all Christians look for small ways to help others, together we can make a big impact. “... Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.” — Matthew 25: 40 |
